What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization, explained simply
AUGUST 4, 2026 · 6 MIN READ · AEO / AI ANSWERS / FUNDAMENTALS
A growing share of questions that used to be typed into Google are now asked to an AI assistant — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude. The assistant answers in sentences, cites a handful of sources, and most people never click through to a results page at all. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the discipline of making sure that when those sentences are about your market, they mention — and ideally cite — you.
How answer engines choose what to say
Answer engines are not mysterious, but they are different from ranked lists. When a user asks a question, most engines do some combination of three things:
- Retrieve: run live web searches (often against traditional search indexes) and pull in the top documents.
- Synthesize: have a language model compress those documents into a direct answer.
- Cite: attach links to the sources that contributed the most usable material.
Two consequences follow. First, classic SEO still matters — if you are not retrievable, you cannot be cited. Second, retrievability alone is not enough: the model has to find your page quotable. Pages that answer questions directly, in clean prose, with clear claims, get lifted into answers. Pages that bury the point under marketing copy get skipped even when they rank.
What AEO work actually looks like
- Answer real questions on your pages. Write the question a buyer would ask as a heading, then answer it in the first sentence below it. FAQ sections, definitions and plain-language explanations are the raw material answers are built from.
- Use structured data. Schema.org markup (FAQPage, Product, Organization, Article) gives engines machine-readable facts they can trust and repeat.
- Make claims specific and attributable.“We support X, we don’t do Y” survives synthesis. Vague superlatives do not.
- Be present where models look. Comparison pages, documentation, and third-party mentions (reviews, directories, communities) all feed retrieval.
- Measure it.Ask the engines your buyers’ questions, on a schedule, and record whether you are mentioned, cited, or absent — and who is mentioned instead.
How AEO differs from SEO
SEO optimizes for a ranked list: the unit of success is a position, and the reward is a click. AEO optimizes for a synthesized answer: the unit of success is a mention or citation, and the reward is being the brand the user hears about — often with no click at all. The tactics overlap (crawlability, authority, good content), but the scoreboard is different, and most teams have no scoreboard for answers yet.
The uncomfortable part: you can’t see it without asking
There is no Search Console for AI answers. The only way to know whether ChatGPT recommends you or your competitor is to ask it — repeatedly, with realistic buyer questions, across engines, over time. That is tedious to do by hand, which is exactly why we built an AEO visibility tracker into HawkOrbit: it puts your real questions to real engines and logs who got mentioned. However you do it — manually or with tooling — start recording a baseline now. You cannot improve a number you have never measured.
HawkOrbit runs these checks live — SEO audits, rank tracking, content gaps and AI-answer visibility — from one command deck, with every run logged.
