How to check your Google rankings (the incognito trick still lies to you)
AUGUST 7, 2026 · 6 MIN READ · SEO / RANK TRACKING / HOW-TO
There are three honest ways to check your Google rankings: Google Search Console (free, real data, but averaged and lagging), manual searches with the gl and hl URL parameters (free, fiddly, roughly location-controlled), and a rank-tracking tool that queries a fixed location on a schedule. Searching your own keyword in a normal browser tab is not on the list — and the incognito window everyone reaches for only fixes part of the problem.
Why searching your own keyword lies to you
Google does not serve one results page per keyword. It serves one per query context, and your context is unusually contaminated for your own keywords:
- Personalization. You visit your own site constantly. Google has noticed, and it happily nudges your pages up for you — and only for you. Incognito mode does remove this layer, which is why the trick feels like it works.
- Location. Results vary by country, region and often city, and incognito does nothing about that. You are still searching from your desk, seeing the results page for your desk. Your customers three time zones away see a different one.
- Datacenter and test variance. Two people in the same city can get slightly different results depending on which datacenter answers and which live experiments they land in. Position 4 for you can be position 6 for the person next to you, and neither of you is wrong.
So the incognito check tells you roughly where you rank, for one location, at one moment, minus personalization. That is a data point, not a measurement.
Method 1: Google Search Console
Search Console’s Performance report shows the average positionyour pages actually earned in real searches — not a probe, but the genuine article. It is free and you should absolutely use it. Just understand what “average” hides:
- It averages across every query variant, country and device that triggered an impression. A 7.3 can be a solid #3 in your home market blended with #40 everywhere else.
- The data lags by a couple of days, so it cannot tell you what happened this morning.
- It only reports queries you already got impressions for. Keywords where you rank on page five — the ones you are trying to grow — barely register.
Use Search Console to see what is really happening in aggregate; use the other methods to see a specific position for a specific place.
Method 2: manual checks with gl and hl parameters
You can push a Google search toward a country context by adding parameters to the URL: gl sets the country (gl=us, gl=in, gl=gb) and hlsets the interface language (hl=en). So a check for a US-English results page looks like google.com/search?q=your+keyword&gl=us&hl=en, ideally in a private window. This is genuinely useful for spot checks — seeing what the SERP for your money keyword looks like in your target country, who ranks around you, which features (ads, maps, AI overviews) sit above you. It is not precise city-level geolocation, and doing it for thirty keywords every week is a job you will quietly stop doing by week three.
Method 3: a rank tracker with a fixed location
This is what rank trackers are actually for: they issue the query from a consistent, specified location, with no search history, on a schedule, and record the position. The value is not that the number is more “true” than your incognito check — it is that the number is consistent. Same location, same method, every time, which means changes in the number reflect changes in the SERP rather than changes in who was asking.
How often, and for which keywords
Weekly beats daily. Positions wobble day to day for reasons that have nothing to do with your work — checking daily mostly teaches you to panic about noise. A weekly check is frequent enough to catch real movement and infrequent enough to show trend.
And track a small set. Ten to thirty keywords that map directly to pages that make you money will tell you more than three hundred vanity terms. A useful test for each keyword: if this position improved by five spots, would anything measurable happen to the business? If not, it is decoration.
Read trends, not snapshots
Whatever method you use, a single position is weather. Google reshuffles constantly; dropping from 4 to 6 for one check and back again is normal breathing, not a crisis. The signal is the four-week line: flat, climbing, or sliding. React to the line.
If you want the fixed-location, scheduled version without maintaining a spreadsheet of gl-parameter URLs, HawkOrbit’s Rank Tracker fires a live SERP query per keyword and keeps the history — but the discipline matters more than the tool: small keyword set, consistent method, weekly cadence, trend over snapshot.
HawkOrbit runs these checks live — SEO audits, rank tracking, content gaps and AI-answer visibility — from one command deck, with every run logged.
